Regardless of your age, maintaining a healthy weight and taking regular exercise are vital to your long-term health and wellbeing. As well as affecting confidence and self-esteem, being overweight can lead to a number of health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, osteoarthritis and cancers.

There are many factors that contribute to a person’s weight such as environment, family history and genetics, metabolism (the way your body changes food and oxygen into energy) and behaviour. In order to lose weight you need to adopt healthier lifestyle habits, which can have real benefits for your long-term health and wellbeing. This means eating less, even when eating a healthy, balanced diet and becoming more active.

How can I lose weight and improve my health?

Nowadays, there are so many options available to help you lose weight; it can be difficult to know what the right solution is for you. The best way to lose weight is steadily, through a combination of healthy eating, eating less and taking regular exercise. With the right diet and regular exercise, you should not only lose weight but have more energy to enjoy life.

Choose a healthier diet

To lose weight, you need to eat fewer calories than your body uses. It will be easier to do this if you limit the amount of food and drink you eat that is high in sugar or fat and cut down on alcohol too. Avoid snacking, make sure you don't miss meals, and be aware of your portion sizes.

Top tips for healthy eating

  • Base your meals on starchy foods such as potatoes, cereals, pasta and rice
  • Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables – at least five portions a day
  • Eat more fish – at least two portions a week, including one portion of oily fish
  • Cut down on the amount of sugar and saturated fat you eat
  • Cut down on the amount of salt that you eat
  • Drink plenty of water – try to drink at least one and a half litres a day
  • Don’t skip breakfast – it fuels you for the day and helps prevent you binge eating
  • Get active daily and achieve your healthy weight
