Well Pharmacy Staff Receive Pay Boost Above National Living Wage

As the UK’s largest independent pharmacy chain, at Well we are increasing pay for thousands of our staff, with many receiving a rise of up to 10 per cent.

Pay for 4,500 of our staff working across our pharmacy stores and driving teams is increasing, with the starting rate for healthcare assistants rising to £7.38 per hour, 18p ahead of the National Living Wage (NLW), and drivers pay rising to £7.33 per hour.

Tracy Barton, our HR Director, said: “We’ve benchmarked ourselves against the pharmacy and retail markets and are investing in colleagues who are behind the national average.  Given the challenges that are out there in the pharmacy sector, we will need our colleagues to play a vital role in helping us deliver our ambitious growth plans and continue delivering expert advice and service to our customers and within our communities.

“For more than 2,000 colleagues, this pay rise represents a near 10 per cent increase in their current salary. The rates will apply to all new starters, including trainees. We will support all trainees through their qualifications.

Any colleague who then qualifies and registers as a pharmacy professional will move to the rate for Pharmacy Technicians as part of our commitment to making sure our colleagues are recognised when they develop new skills, in turn providing even better care for our customers.”

A total of seven roles will benefit from the pay increases: Trainee Healthcare Assistant (+10%), Healthcare Assistant (+8%), Pharmacy Assistant Trainee (+8%), Pharmacy Assistant (+10%), Pharmacy Technician (+2%), Delivery Driver (+8%), and Delivery Team Manager (+2%).

We are also extending the rises to all ages within our stores and driver teams, not just those aged 25 and over, as set out in the NLW requirements.
